Rules & FAQs

Learn More About Palm-Oil Sustainability2025-10-13T21:04:33+00:00
  1. What is palm oil? Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world.
  2. Where does palm oil come from? Palm oil comes from the fruit of the African oil palm tree (elaeis guineensis)
  3. What is palm oil found in? Palm oil is in half of all prepackaged products, from candy and chocolate to makeup and cleaning supplies.
  4. Why is palm oil used in food? Palm oil helps preserve the flavor and texture of food for a long time.
  5. Where is palm oil grown? About 85% of the world’s palm oil comes from tropical countries, mostly Indonesia and Malaysia.
  6. Why is palm oil used so much? Palm oil requires three to five times less land than other vegetable oils, like soybean or sunflower oil. That means, when grown sustainably, palm oil can be better for the planet.
  7. How is palm oil typically grown? Many palm oil plantations are made by clear-cutting tropical forests. This destroys habitats for orangutans, tigers and many other species!
  8. Is all palm oil bad? No. Many companies work to protect orangutan habitat and support reforestation.
  9. How can palm oil be grown sustainably? Some growers plant palm oil trees under the canopy of tropical forests. The trees are small enough to harvest fruit without cutting down the big rainforest trees.
  10. How can I help? You can use the Palm Oil Scan app and choose products made with RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil.
Batteries for Boo at the Zoo2025-10-13T21:04:50+00:00

Who can participate?
Every household is invited to recycle!

What batteries are accepted?
We’ll collect household batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and all button batteries.

When should I bring them?
Start saving your old batteries now, and bring them with you on event day.

Where do I drop them off?
Look for the collection site near the pond gazebo across from Penguin Chill.

Why is this important?
The average American family tosses out 8 to 12 batteries per person each year. If all 5,500 families at Boo at the Zoo threw theirs away, that could be almost 176,000 batteries headed for the landfill.

Recycling keeps those chemicals out of the ground, reduces fire risks and saves valuable minerals. Best of all, it helps protect the wild places where animals—especially those that are endangered—make their homes.

We love creative costumes, funny costumes, and all other types of costumes! We don’t love costumes that are obstructive, offensive, objectionable, or violent, and we won’t let them inside the Zoo on event day. Please make sure that your costume is appropriate before coming out to Boo at the Zoo.

PLEASE NOTE: ABSOLUTELY NO INFLATABLE COSTUMES WILL BE ALLOWED INSIDE THE ZOO. Inflatable costumes upset our Zoo residents and are not acceptable.
